This calculator uses the updated 2025 NMFC density scale for density-based LTL freight classes. Freight class can still be affected by handling, stowability, liability, declared value, hazardous material status, and commodity-specific NMFC rules, so use the result as a planning estimate and confirm final classification with your carrier or 3PL.

4 but less than 6 lb/ft³ Class 175 Moderate-low density freight. This class is still rate-sensitive, so small packaging changes that reduce height or dead space can matter. Watch carton height and pallet overhang before tendering.
6 but less than 8 lb/ft³ Class 125 Mid-range density freight. This is common for palletized commercial shipments; quote rates can vary materially by lane and carrier discount. Confirm lane pricing and carrier discounts before booking.
8 but less than 10 lb/ft³ Class 100 Better-density freight. It generally prices more efficiently than bulky classes, but final class can still change if the commodity has handling or liability concerns. Exactly 8.0 lb/ft³ moves into Class 100.
10 but less than 12 lb/ft³ Class 92.5 Dense freight. This usually means lower LTL rate per hundredweight than class 100+ freight, assuming no special commodity rules apply. Confirm stackability and any declared-value rules.
12 but less than 15 lb/ft³ Class 85 Dense, efficient freight. Carriers can usually stow this more efficiently, which often improves rating. Good density, but dimensions still need to be accurate.
15 but less than 22.5 lb/ft³ Class 70 High-density freight. This is typically favorable for LTL rates, but verify packaging, stackability, and declared value. Check pallet strength and packaging integrity.
22.5 but less than 30 lb/ft³ Class 65 Very dense freight. Rates are generally lower per hundredweight, though minimum charges and accessorials can still dominate small shipments. Accessorials may matter more than class on small moves.
30 but less than 35 lb/ft³ Class 60 Very high-density freight. This class often rates efficiently, but carrier reweigh/reclass can still apply if dimensions are off. Keep weight and dimensions documented.
35 but less than 50 lb/ft³ Class 55 Extremely dense freight. Confirm weight accuracy and pallet strength because dense shipments can trigger handling constraints. Dense loads need strong pallets and clear handling notes.
50 or greater lb/ft³ Class 50 Highest-density class in the current density scale. Usually the lowest density-based LTL class, but commodity-specific NMFC rules may override the density estimate. Confirm no commodity-specific NMFC exception applies.

How to Calculate LTL Freight Class

Measure the shipped unit

Use outside dimensions including the pallet, packaging, overhang, and final shipping height.

Convert cube to density

Total cubic feet equals quantity × length × width × height. Density equals total pounds divided by total cubic feet.

Map density to class

The lookup uses full precision and lower-bound-inclusive breakpoints, so exactly 8.0 lb/ft³ returns Class 100.

Freight Class Calculator Questions

A freight class calculator estimates the NMFC class for an LTL shipment from its dimensions and weight. It converts shipment size into cubic feet, calculates density in pounds per cubic foot, and maps that density to the current NMFC density-class table.
Measure the shipment including pallets and packaging, multiply length by width by height to get cubic inches, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then divide total weight by cubic feet to get density. The density maps to an NMFC freight class, although handling, stowability, liability, value, and commodity rules can override a density-only estimate.
The 2025 density scale uses 13 density-based classes: 400, 300, 250, 175, 125, 100, 92.5, 85, 70, 65, 60, 55, and 50. Lower-density shipments receive higher classes, while denser shipments generally receive lower classes.
The 2025 NMFC update made density the primary classification factor for many commodities and simplified the density scale for affected items.
