Volumetric weight converts package space into a billing-weight estimate, then carriers usually compare that estimate with actual scale weight.

Total-Shipment vs Piece-by-Piece Chargeable Weight
With one identical carton profile multiplied by quantity, total-shipment and piece-by-piece methods produce the same result. They diverge when a shipment has different carton sizes or weights.

Why sellers should check the method
Piece-by-piece billing can cost more for mixed carton profiles because heavy-small cartons and light-bulky cartons each get charged on their higher weight before the results are added together.
Volumetric Weight vs CBM
Volumetric weight converts space into a billing-weight estimate. CBM measures cubic meters of shipment volume. For LCL and sea freight, CBM and revenue tons often matter more than parcel DIM weight.
