Why sellers should check the method

Piece-by-piece billing can cost more for mixed carton profiles because heavy-small cartons and light-bulky cartons each get charged on their higher weight before the results are added together.

Volumetric weight converts space into a billing-weight estimate. CBM measures cubic meters of shipment volume. For LCL and sea freight, CBM and revenue tons often matter more than parcel DIM weight.

Volumetric Weight Calculator Questions

It depends on the carrier, service, mode, and rate card. A ÷5000 divisor is common for express and courier planning, while ÷6000 is common for many air freight, road freight, economy, and cargo calculations. Use both for planning, then use the exact divisor from your carrier quote.
Measure the packed carton’s outside length, width, and height. Multiply length × width × height, then divide by the carrier’s volumetric divisor. For example, 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm ÷ 6000 = 10 kg.
Carriers divide by 5000 to convert package volume into a billing-weight estimate. It reflects the idea that bulky lightweight cartons take up network space even if they do not weigh much on a scale. A lower divisor like 5000 creates a higher volumetric weight than 6000.
Shipping volume weight is calculated from the packed carton’s dimensions, not the product dimensions alone. Use length × width × height ÷ divisor for each carton, then multiply by the carton quantity or compare per piece depending on the carrier method. The billable weight is usually the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight.
Choose the right unit system first. In centimeters, calculate length × width × height ÷ 5000 or ÷6000 to get kilograms; in inches, calculate length × width × height ÷139 or ÷166 to get pounds. If you are unsure which divisor applies, compare the common rows in the grid and confirm the final divisor with the carrier.
Actual weight is the scale weight of the packed carton. Volumetric weight is a billing-weight estimate based on how much space the carton occupies. Carriers usually charge the higher of the two because a large light box can consume more vehicle, aircraft, or warehouse space than its scale weight suggests.
Chargeable weight is the weight used for billing. It is usually the greater of total actual weight and total volumetric weight, though some carriers compare per piece and then sum the result. Comparing both methods explains why two carriers can rate the same shipment differently.
Sea freight often uses CBM or revenue tons rather than parcel-style DIM weight. For LCL planning, compare actual metric tons against shipment CBM, often using 1 CBM ≈ 1 revenue ton as a planning rule. For container-fit and cubic-meter planning, use a CBM calculator.
