Chargeable weight is the weight a carrier bills for a shipment. It is usually the greater of actual/gross weight and volumetric/dimensional weight. Volumetric weight changes by mode: air freight commonly uses 6000 cm³/kg, express courier often uses 5000 cm³/kg, and sea LCL uses a W/M revenue-ton rule where 1 CBM is compared with 1 metric ton.

Chargeable Weight, Actual Weight, Volumetric Weight, and Revenue Tons

The calculator separates the terms because they answer different questions. Actual weight is what the shipment weighs on a scale. Volumetric weight estimates how much network space the shipment consumes. Chargeable weight is the billable value after the carrier compares the relevant numbers. Sea LCL uses a revenue-ton comparison, often called W/M for weight or measure, so the final number is not a kilogram result.

Which Chargeable-Weight Rule Should You Compare?

Air freight: 6000 ⇄ 166

International air freight commonly uses length × width × height ÷ 6000 in centimeters to estimate kilograms. In inches and pounds, the matching planning divisor is 166 in³/lb.

Express courier: 5000 ⇄ 139

Express and courier-style services often use 5000 cm³/kg, which produces a higher volumetric weight from the same carton. In imperial inputs, the matching planning divisor is 139 in³/lb.

Sea LCL: W/M revenue tons

For LCL, compare shipment CBM with weight tons. The output is revenue tons, such as 1.26 RT, because this billing basis is different from air or courier kilograms.

Road and inland: carrier-specific

There is no universal APAC road divisor. The 3000 cm³/kg row in this tool is optional and labelled as an inland or rail-style example, not a default road rule.

Use the Calculator Without Overstating Weight

Measure packed dimensions

Use the outside length, width, and height of the carton or pallet as it will be handed to the carrier. Include master cartons, pallets, overhang, void fill, straps, and protective packaging.

Choose the right weight basis

Leave weight as total shipment weight when the scale number already covers all pieces. Choose per piece only when each package has the same weight and the entered value belongs to one piece.

Compare modes before quoting

Use air, courier, and sea LCL rows to decide which carrier questions to ask. If road or inland freight is in scope, request the exact divisor instead of assuming a regional standard.

Pallet Example: 140 × 100 × 90 cm, 150 kg

A common air-freight pallet example is one pallet measuring 140 cm × 100 cm × 90 cm with 150 kg actual weight. The total volume is 1.26 CBM. Air freight at ÷6000 gives 210 kg volumetric weight, so 210 kg is chargeable. Express courier at ÷5000 gives 252 kg. Sea LCL compares 1.26 CBM with 0.15 metric tons, so the planning result is 1.26 RT before carrier minimums or rounding. The optional 3000 inland example gives 420 kg, but that is not a universal APAC road rule.

Chargeable Weight Formulas in cm, kg, inches, and pounds

For metric air freight, multiply length × width × height × pieces in centimeters, then divide by 6000 to get volumetric kilograms. For metric express courier, use the same cubic-centimeter volume but divide by 5000. For imperial air freight, multiply length × width × height × pieces in inches, then divide by 166 to get dimensional pounds. For imperial courier planning, divide cubic inches by 139. These pairs matter because 6000 cm³/kg maps to about 166 in³/lb, while 5000 cm³/kg maps to about 139 in³/lb. Reversing them makes quotes look artificially low or high.

The sea LCL row intentionally uses a different formula. It converts the shipment volume into CBM, converts actual weight into metric tons, and chooses the larger revenue-ton value. A shipment with 1.26 CBM and 0.15 metric tons is therefore 1.26 RT for LCL planning. That does not mean the shipment weighs 1.26 kg or 1.26 lb; it means the shipment is being rated on measure rather than weight. For full-container load moves, this W/M comparison is usually not the billing basis because FCL is commonly priced by container, lane, and service.

Where Chargeable Weight Changes the Commercial Decision

For ecommerce and D2C sellers, chargeable weight is often where a product that looks profitable in a landed-cost sheet becomes expensive in the real carrier invoice. Apparel, accessories, beauty kits, homeware, toys, and giftable bundles can be physically light but bulky after protective packaging is added. A carton that weighs only a few kilograms can rate much higher when it moves through an express network, especially across borders where dimensional weight, fuel surcharge, remote-area fees, customs handling, and minimum charges stack together.

The practical workflow is simple: measure the packed shipping carton, check the chargeable weight before requesting quotes, compare air and courier outputs when delivery speed is flexible, and use CBM when deciding whether sea LCL is worth the slower transit time. If the chargeable number is much higher than scale weight, packaging optimization may save more than carrier shopping. Reducing carton height, removing void fill, right-sizing master cartons, or splitting a bulky assortment differently can lower billable weight without changing the product itself.
